It was an up and down weekend for Northern

LAST Saturday Northern lost their drop zone clash at Crow Lane East against Newton-Le-Willows by 3 wickets but beat Fleetwood Hesketh by five wickets the following day at Moor Park in the Business Assistance (NW) Trophy 1st round.

Northern`s 170 all out after 51.1 overs against Newton-Le-Willows was built around opener and seventh man out with the total on 135 Steve Coles defiant 56 off 119 deliveries featuring nine fours.

Adrian Fraser, 13, his brother James, 25, and John Wildman, 14, gave him vital support in first, third and fourth wicket partnerships of 31, 29 and 32 respectively.

A late flourish of 27 from 28 balls, including a six and 4 fours, from Anthony Symondson steered the Moor Park outfit to 170 all out at tea.

Spinner John Humphreys, 5 for 33, was the visitor’s chief tormentor.

In response Newton-Le-Willows openers Mark Fearnley, 29, and Ian Lyon, 43, saw their side well placed on 75 without lost.

However Paul Park, 4 for 55, and John Wildman, 1 for 34, reduced their hosts to 101 for 4.

Danny Barlow, 29, and Mike Walkden, 24 with 3 sixes, fought back adding 46 for the fifth wicket.

Liam Horsfield, John Humphreys and Aaron Scott helped Danny Barlow keep up the good work completing Northern`s demise after 50.3 overs.

On Sunday Neil Rimmer, 76, and Derek Sykes, 30, saw Fleetwood Hesketh well placed on 96 for one.

Jack Woosey, 3 for 26, Anthony Symondson, and John Wildman, 2 for 18, responded reducing their adversaries to 158 for 7.

Steve Gregory, Bhautic Shukla and Tony Rogan managed to steer Fleetwood Hesketh to a respectable 182 for 9 from their allocated 45 overs.

Adrian Fraser, 25, and Jack Boardman, 26, put Northern in a good position, in reply, on 112 for 2.

James Cole, 38, and John Wildman, 17, kept up the momentum guiding their side to 168 for 5.
