Community Heroes
Entertaining school winners
THE St Ambrose Barlow High School steel band, winner in the schools category, has for a number of years been entertaining people at various functions throughout the region.
The band, made up of between 15 and 20 pupils from years seven to 11, was started six years ago when music teacher Rob Gore arrived at the school and is so popular with its members that even ex-students go back to the school to play in it.
The band plays at all kinds of functions, including charity and social occasions both in and outside school, and last year entertained diners at the Community Heroes awards at Formby Hall.
Only last month it played at the Southport Soroptimists 77th Charter Year luncheon, it played at Aintree Racecourse last week and is appearing at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool next week at a concert for local schools.
Pupils give up their own time for rehearsals, which take place after school on Wednesday afternoons.
The band gives its members great team working experience and the pupils the confidence to be able to lead tutorial sessions and workshops, and the band has given enormous pleasure to individuals and groups across Sefton, making it a worthy winner in the schools category.
