In the past, the Treasury has insisted that taxpayers increasingly want to email, rather than write letters – a changing demand that could be met by a smaller number of staff.

HMRC local spokesman Dave Gostelow said: “When HMRC recruit staff on fixed-term contracts, they are provided with a specific end date.

“I can confirm that a number of employees, on fixed-term contracts, have been advised their contracts will not be extended.

“We appreciate this will be difficult news for some people and those affected will be given assistance in seeking other employment.”

He said it was decided after consultation that there was “no business need” to extend the contracts, adding: “There is no suggestion at all this will affect customer service.”

JOB losses were announced elsewhere on Merseyside last night.

Communications specialist Selex Comms is seeking 10 voluntary redundancies from its 61-strong Liverpool workforce.

The Essex-based group, which makes hi-tech military communications systems blamed MoD cutbacks.

And 20 workers at Manor Bakeries, in Moreton, also face redundancy.

The cake manufacturer, part of the Premier Foods group, currently employs 320 people at the Wirral site.

A spokesman said the redundancies were due to changes in the market.
